Whitney toured the United States and Canada during the
late 1960’s and early 1970’s with a 5-piece show band. She was the lead
female singer for the group and also played lead Guitar, Banjo, Flute,
Bass, Piano and Electric Keyboards.
Upon returning home to California Whitney formed
“The Sounds of
Nirih,” which performed in clubs throughout the Bay Area, but mostly in
Solano County where they played for several years in the Social Quarters
of the Moose Lodge in Vacaville and a wonderful small club in Suisun City
called “H-Jays.”
Whitney retired from show business about 10 years ago, but since she and
her husband moved to Fall River Mills she has become enthused about
performing again, but on a much smaller scale.
Whitney works mostly as a solo entertainer, but is often joined by her
husband, Singer-Guitarist Steve Murdock. Although Niteowl and Maryann
still live in the Bay Area with their family, Steve and Whitney are hoping
that they will be moving up to this area within
the next year or two.
While “The Sounds of Nirih” play 6-string and 12-string Guitars, Bass,
Trombone, Keyboards, Electric Drums, Banjo and Flute, Whitney relies
mostly on her electric keyboard (with all of its various accompaniments
and sound effects) as
her primary source of accompaniment when she works alone. However, she
also brings an assortment of tamborines, maracas and other rhythm
instruments as well as extra microphones, encouraging “Audience
Participation.”
